NASA to make ‘space tug’ as it
seeks to retire International
Space Station by 2030.
NASA will be funding a nuclear powered
rocket, Bimodal Nuclear Thermal Rocket,
that could cut people's journey to Mars from
7 months to just 45 days. The rocket will be
capable of transporting both humans and
cargo across the Solar System.
NASA and Boeing hosted a media teleconference on
June 1 to provide an update on the agency's
Boeing Crew Flight Test (CFT) to the International
Space Station-the first flight with astronauts
on the company's CST-100 Starliner spacecraft.
Scientists from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena,
California, announced today the discovery of a new moon orbiting
Neptune.
The moon was discovered on Wednesday, July 5, when photos returned from
the Voyager 2 probe en route to Neptune showed it. The new moon,
dubbed 1989 N1, was first detected in Voyager 2 photographs beamed
to Earth in mid-June. Images of the small body in its expected orbit
later proved its existence.
Dr. Stephen P. Synnott of JPL's Voyager imaging team discovered the
faint, bright smudge in Voyager images that led to the moon's
discovery.
The new Neptunian satellite, according to Synnott, could have a diameter
of 200 to 600 kilometers (approximately 125 to 400 miles) and circles
around Neptune.
